Dear diary,
Oh gosh! The day i had today was slightly awful, i expected Mitch to woo me off my feet but hes abit hesitant and i dont know whether i like him that much. He just talked about his weight and that didnt interest me very much however manly he may be. i dont know what i feel anymore? He wants to get close but i dont think i can let him. i dont want to feel used again, that would just bring back horrible memories. Those memories that i need to get rid of! Who knows what Mitch is like? I mean he is friends with Stanley and that man isnt the best of role models even though he maybe my beautiful sisters husband. That isnt fair i shouldnt say those things, perhaps i could give him a chance.
Another thing that brought me a warm feeling is the fact that i could talk to him about the tragic event regarding Allan and he didnt even flinch. He understood exactly how i felt and when he hugged me it sort of felt nice. Are me and him meant to be? Could this be a happy ever after? Well i am lonely and so is he so it cant hurt can it? Oh God i dont know how i feel about him. I dont want to feel like im using him to fill this big empty void in my life

Scene 6 questions
From the opening scene we can tell things are quite awkward between Blanche and Mitch and that they didnt have a good time, we can tell this through William's stage directions and the characters dialogue with one another. "The utter exhaustion which only a neurasthenic personality can know is evident in Blanches voice and manner. mitch is solid but depressed" Also they dont know what to say to each other so you can tell they havent really clicked. "well..." Blanche doesnt know what to say so shes waiting for Mitch to come out with something. "Mitch laughs uneasily" shows us that Mitch isnt comfortable in the situation and its almost like he doesnt really know what to do or want be there. perhaps he is laughing to try and ease the situation out and make it so it is less awkward.
When Blanche rejects Mitchs offer to kiss her she tries to justify herself, she almost tries to make her self out to be innocent and thats why she doesnt let him kiss her." Honey, you know as well as i do that a single girl, a girl alone in the world has to keep a firm hold on her emotions or she'll get lost" Blanche is trying to say that shes innocent and if shes doesnt stop Mitchs advances at her "she'll get lost" shes referring to sex. She also then accuses of Mitch "being used to girls that like to be lost on the first date" however we as the audience fully well know that Blanche does it all the time when she was at the hotel Flamingo however shes making herself out to be the good one in this context.
"i was getting soft in the belly but now my belly is hard" Mitch is trying to impress Blanche by telling her how hes built up his body. In which Blanche replies with a compliment "you have a massive bone-structure and a very imposing physique" she is putting him at ease however when Mitch continues to talk about himself and his physical appearance she gets bored and isnt fascinated by it however as we see from the beginning of the play Blanche is always trying to talk about how she looks and often tries to fish for compliments. Even thought Mitch is trying his best to impress her she isnt so impressed. "Oh my goodness me! its awe inspiring" she says it sarcastically which Mitch detects and then changes the topic of conversation onto her.

Writing task
Stanley and Stella are sitting down around the table eating breakfast. Stanley wearing a dirty vest and Stella is in her night gown
Stanley: You alright baby?
Stella: Of course i am
Stanley: Im sorry if i hurt you. You know i didnt mean for anything to happen, its just we had too much to drink last night
Stella: Its okay you dont have to explain yourself, i understand. But i think Blanche was shook up about it. Its not fair on her she shouldnt have had to witness that
Stanley: Its not fair on us thats shes invading our home! Shes more that welcome to leave, no ones forcing her to stay.
Stella: oh Stanley, please dont be like that. Blanche is my sister
Stanley: Yes but shes interferring and now i wont hear the end of it because shes witnessed me at my worst. I tell you Stella shes going to be filling you with poison against me
Stella: Shes never seen anything like it thats why. But dont worry she wont say anything to you once i explain to her what your like
Stanley: Anyway enough about your prancy sister, im off to grease the car. You need to get yourself back in bed. It'll do you some good
Stanley gets up from the table and puts on the shirt that was on the chair and walks out. As he walks out he looks up at Eunices to see if he can see Blanche, as there is no sign of her he grins and gets into the car.

scene 4 questions.
Stella is "sort of thrilled" by Stanleys violence because everytime he is violent towards her, they have sex after so she knows that he wants her. We know this as Stella mentioned thats what happened on their wedding night "on our wedding night he snatched off one of my slippers and rushed around the place smashing the light bulbs with it. Also Stella is attracted to Stanley because him being violent shows his masculinity and she likes that whereas Blanche finds mad. "you're married to a madman".
Blanche says "your fix is worse than mine" this is a statement that can be used to describe Stanley and Stellas relationship where Stella cant help but love Stanley because she needs him. Its like saying shes a druggie who cant live without her fix of drugs. Blanche also recognises that Stella has a problem which is worse than hers From this statement we can tell that Blanche doesnt approve of Stanley as she often mentions throughout the play.
Blanches plans for the future is to get in contact with Shep who is wealthy "Texas is literally spouting gold in his pockets" and he will help Stella and Blanche set up a shop so they can get away from Stanley. Blanche has always been of a high maintenance and was quite shocked when she arrived at Stellas house so now she wants to finally be able to show how classy she is if shes goes to Shep.

Scene 3 = poker night analysis
Scene 3 - extract 1 :
Stanley is in control of setting the agenda at the beginning of the scene and he is also in control of what happens around the table. "Get off the table Mitch" shows that Stanley has a say in things and it is often done unquestionablely. This also shows the readers that Stanley has high authority as he is able to say that in his group of friends whereas if it was someone who didnt have aunthority it would have gone unnoticed . Stanley is also the dominant speaker throught the scene he has the most lines
Mitch in this scene is portrayed as the sensitive one "i gotta sick mother. she dont go sleep until i come in at night" he realises that he has responsibilities however all the others seem to be drinking and enjoying themselves. this shows that Mitch is abit different from the others he doesnt get involved in much of the drinking and is the sensible one.
Scene 3- extract 2:
when stella and Blanche return their topic of conversation is about Blanche and her appearance, where Blanche is controlling the conversation by asking how she looks "do i look done in?" This shows that Blanche is self conscious and it also shows us the close relationship between Blanche and Stella. Blanche values her sisters opinion and trusts her to make a good judgement. Like Stanley Blanche is also a dominant speaker and like to voice her opinions. Blanche often mentions the fact that she wants to bathe, she could be trying to wash away her past and all the bad memories associated with that. It also could be a biblical illusion as most christians get baptized to wash away their sins and makes themselves purer so in this context Blanche is trying to be pure.
Scene 3 - extract 3:
Blanche takes a sudden interest in Mitch when she first meets him and he also stares at her, there was a mutual physical attraction. " that one seems - superior to the others" Blanche has realised that he is different from the others in a good way.
Blanche presents herself as confident and sophisticated to Mitch. "Its a crench name. i means woods and Blanche means white, so the two together mean white woods" the word white is used trying to symbolize how pure and innocent she is even thought we know that isnt true. she is trying to make herself look good in front of Mitch.
Mitch and blanche are attracted to each other because they share similiar experiences they both lost young lovers so they fee a connection. Also Mitch needs someone to take care of him after his mum passes away and Blanche also is in need of company so they are a perfect for each other.
Scene 3- extract 4-
Stanley turns the radio off because at the beginning of the scene he was in control however when the women came back, they were in control of what was happening and he didnt like that so he turned it off showing everyone whos in power
the radio signifys who has the power in the house
The men know how to react to stanleys violence as they have often experienced it and they remained calm however Blanche was shaken up by it "Lunacy, absolute lunacy!"
Scene 3- extract 5
Stanley gets upset and starts sobbing when Stella leaves him. "i want my baby down here. Stella Stella!" this shows us that even though he is violent he realises what he does and appears very sorry. he is tender after he hurts her. he probably doesnt realise what hes doing sometimes and how it will affect people. he is one of them people who doent think before they do something. The sobbing reveals to the audience that Stanley does have a caring nature especially towards Stella.
Stella goes back to Stanley because this isnt the first time its happened and she knows that after the violence he always makes it up to her by making love
Blanche says she wants kindness now because all her life shes been moved from piller to post and used by many different men who didnt show her any love, shes tired of it. she hasnt been treated fairly in the past whatever she had has always been taken away from her.

Stanley Kowalski
Stanley is a butch polish man married to Stella, hes often referred to as a "Polack" which is racist and often infuriates him. He is portrayed as a violent, short tempered butch man who beats his wife and at the end of the play rapes his sister in law. His main interests are bowling, gambling and drinking and usually does whatever he wants without taking anyone into consideration.
He often throughout the play has no respect for anyone
evidence supporting this-
" he heaves the package at her" the package is full of meat, it shows that he doesnt have respect at all otherwise he would have come and given it to her. he throws the package to her not at her, also at this stage shes pregnant but it doesnt bother him, he still lunges something heavy towards her.
"hello, wheres the little lady?" he doesnt refer to Stella as her name but instead calls her a little lady, displaying no respect towards his wife.

diary entry
Dear diary
I am having mixed emotions on whether i am happy to return home or not. Things between Blanche and Stella seemed to have gone from bad to worse. Why cant they sort things out? Only now Blanche wont talk she just sits there in a daze almost as if shes not here. She doesnt talk much and when she does shes badmouthing stanley calling him all the names under the sun, behind his back obviously and i dont think i can deal with that. Hes my husband and i shouldnt be putting up with the bad abuse that she calls him. I also thought she would be ecstatic to see the baby, she didnt look like she was happy to see it, it was almost as if i've disappointed her. Perhaps she's jealous like stanley suggested? But she seemed to excited when i was pregnant so what changed?
Im just so scared that things between them will turn so cold that one of them will just have to leave. i couldnt possibly choose they both mean so much to me, Blanche is my older sister whos been there for me for most of her life and stanley is the love of my life and now the father of my baby. But i know i cant bring up my child where there is constant conflict. Stanley has always been keen on her to leave and perhaps now is the right time? Oh lord i dont to what to think right now! I need to make a decision.
Maybe if she did leave then she could try building a future for herself with that Shep guy shes always mentioning.she would be alot happier then she is right now, i honestly just want the best for her. It would also mean that Stanley and I could concentrate on raising our child properly. Its not like Blanche can never visit, shes always welcome but for now i think i need a break and hopefully Stanley will realise that them two arguing and bickering all the time was trivial.
